West Java, Indonesia, June 2004

A series of underwater digital images taken in Java, Indonesia. All dives were made at Sangyang Island, Sunda Strait, as well as Pulau Seribu (Thousand Islands) between 18 - 26 June 2004. All images were taken with an Olympus 5050 housed in an Olympus PT-015 housing mounted on a ULCS tray with arms. A single Inon Z-220 strobe was also used.

These dive sites are among the closest to Jakarta, and can be easily reached from the capital the same day. The Pulau Seribu are a popular weekend destination for Jakarta city-dwellers anxious to escape the often sizzling heat of the metropolis. Visibility is fair to poor, and much of the coral has been damaged.

Sangyang island is much more remote and difficult to reach as there are no commercial boats serving the island. As there can often be strong currents racing through the Sunda Strait which joins the Indian Ocean and Java Sea, both soft and hard corals can be found in great abundance. The rich nutrients carried by the currents through the strait support a healthy abundance of marine life, but visibility is also fair to poor.
